Responding to the attacks, violence and killings of ordinary students protesting for quota reform, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said the United States is closely monitoring violence in the movement. Quota movement is being monitored from Dhaka and Washington. He also condemned violence in peaceful protests.
The spokesperson of the US State Department said these things in response to a journalist’s question at a regular press conference on Wednesday local time.
Matthew Miller said repression of student protests in Bangladesh continues. At least six people were killed in the movement. They were killed by law and order forces. Chhatra League, the government party’s student organization in the movement, is being particularly cruel to students, especially girl students.
In response to a question about Chhatra League’s activities, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said, ‘I will not say anything specific about this (considering Chhatra League as a terrorist organization). I will just say that the United States is keeping an eye on the violence that is happening to the protesting students in Bangladesh. We also continue to call for peaceful protests. At the same time we condemn any form of violence in peaceful protests. I also call on the government to uphold people’s right to protest peacefully.’
