A mobile court in a drive on Saturday fined two traders in Dhaka for hiking prices of dried foods such as puffed rice, flattened rice, and jaggery as demand for relief supplies surged in flood-affected areas.
They were taking advantage of the ongoing flood situation.
Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) conducted drives in several markets in Dhaka on Saturday to stabilize product supplies and prices.
The drive was conducted by Md Abdus Salam, assistant director of DNCRP’s Dhaka divisional office.
According to DNCRP sources, the directorate managed market monitoring activities in the Karwan Bazar area to keep the prices of relief materials stable and ensure normal supply.
As part of this, two traders in Karwan Bazar were fined Tk10,000 each, totalling Tk20,000.
Additionally, one establishment was temporarily shut down for selling jaggery mixed with sugar, hydrogen, and food soda.
