Sheikh Hasina left the country and took refuge in India after resigning in the face of mass protests by the students. From there he is supposed to go to another country, but for now he is staying in India. After leaving the country, Sheikh Hasina complained that the US was behind her ouster.
However, the country said that the United States has no role in this matter. Washington has even termed the allegations of US intervention in Bangladesh as ‘simply false’. Reuters reported this information in a report on Tuesday (August 13).
According to Reuters, White House spokesperson Karin Jean-Pierre was asked how true the allegations of US involvement in the overthrow of the government in Bangladesh are. He answered this question through a press briefing. The spokesperson said, ‘We had absolutely no involvement. Any reports or rumors that the US government was involved in this incident are simply false.’
According to Reuters, India’s Economic Times newspaper quoted Hasina in a report last Sunday as saying that the United States played a role in ousting her because they (the United States) want control over Bangladesh’s St. Martin island in the Bay of Bengal. The newspaper said Hasina conveyed this message to the newspaper through her close aides.
However, Hasina’s son Sajib Wazed said in a post on social media platform X last Sunday that she (Hasina) never gave such a statement.
The White House also said on Monday, “We believe that the Bangladeshi people should determine the future of the government of Bangladesh and that is exactly our position.”
It is to be noted that Sheikh Hasina was forced to resign after more than 400 people were killed in weeks of protests over job quotas. After Hasina resigned as Prime Minister and fled the country, an interim government took over in Bangladesh. The Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
