But why did the Muijju government make such a complaint? Recent media reports have revealed that the Maldives has run out of usable dollar reserves. Not just zero, the stock is running in the ‘minus’.
A few days after this news, the top bank of Maldives ‘Bank of Maldives (BML)’ took a big step. BML directed to stop foreign transactions from debit and credit cards issued by banks.
After this fear spread among the people of the country. However, the decision was withdrawn by the BML within hours of issuing the directive.
Days after reports of running out of usable dollar reserves, BML halted dollar transactions with cards, the currency of the Maldives, Rufiyaa. The credit card limit was also reduced to $100.
All these changes are effective immediately, BML said. The move comes as foreign currency spending on cards continues to increase and foreign currency sales to banks stabilize.
After this again foreign transactions from debit and credit cards issued by the bank were ordered to stop.
After this, the government of the island nation roared. After the party meeting, President Muizju said he was not aware of the whole matter. This announcement was made by BML without consulting him, Muizzu claimed. Besides Muijju said, he will try to solve the problem soon.
Muijju and the leaders of his party People’s National Congress (PNC) claim that the opposition parties are behind the decision of the BML. The government has also raised the question as to how the former finance minister held a press conference after announcing that the BML was running out of dollar reserves.
The Muijju government has also alleged that the opposition is trying to bring financial disaster to Maldives through all these decisions. Attempts are being made to overthrow the government.
Muizzu also condemned the BML’s move as an ‘illegal attempt’ to topple his government.
The police also said that criticism of the Muijju government has already started online. Hundreds of ‘fake’ accounts on social media are inciting people to take to the streets to overthrow the government
According to a report by news agency AFP, police in the Maldives have launched an investigation into allegations that Muijju was ousted in a financial coup. Police said in a statement late on Monday night, “Investigation has been initiated into the allegation of attempted financial coup.”
However, a section of the opposition claims that the BML’s board of directors does not have the majority of the Muijju government. And that is why BML did not feel the need to inform the government.
Fayyaz Ismail, chairperson of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the main opposition party in Maldives, claimed, ‘If there is a coup, it will be from within the government and the government will be responsible for it. The opposition will have no hand.’
