For three days, the entire northern region, including Lalmonirhat, has been receiving heavy and light rains, along with the rise in water in the Teesta due to the mountain runoff from upstream India. In this situation, 44 gates of Teesta Barrage have been kept open.
It is known that the Meteorological Department has recorded 130 mm rainfall in Rangpur alone in the last 24 hours. Due to heavy rains, the water in the rivers has started to rise. Teesta and Dharla river water level is increasing. On the other hand, the water level of Dudhkumar river is stable. However, the river water is still flowing below the flood line.
The flow of water at Doani Point of Teesta Barrage, the country’s largest irrigation project located at Hatibandha in Lalmonirhat, was recorded at 51.83 cm at 3 pm on Friday. which is flowing 32.1 cm below the boundary (normal 52.15 cm).
As a result of daily rainfall and the increase in water flowing upstream, the water in all the rivers including the Teesta in Rangpur, Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram and Gaibandha districts is also continuing to increase in water bills. As the low-lying areas are flooded, houses and roads are at risk of erosion. Also, due to water rising in the cropland, various crops including early winter vegetables and seeds are being destroyed.
According to the Meteorological Department, there is a trend of very heavy rainfall in Rangpur division and adjacent uplands till Saturday. As a result, the water level of Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers may increase rapidly for the next two days and the water level of the rivers may remain stable for the next one day. Till the next two days, Teesta river water in Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur and Kurigram districts may flow in plain warning-limit. Grassland and low-lying areas along the river banks of these districts may be flooded. On the other hand, the water of Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers in Kurigram district may flow below the flood plain for the next three days.
Meanwhile, the water flow at Kaunia Point of Teesta River was recorded at 28.75 cm at 9 am on Friday. which (normal 29.31 cm) is flowing 56.56 cm below the boundary line. Earlier, at 6 am, water flowed below the danger line by 61 cm.
Mohammad Rashedin, Deputy Engineer of Water Development Board Dalia Branch, said that Teesta water is still below the dangerous limit. 44 gates of Teesta barrage have been kept open. Due to continuous rainfall, the water level of Teesta river has started rising.
