High Court Division Justice Syed Refat Ahmed has been appointed as the 25th Chief Justice of Bangladesh. He was appointed by the President under Article 95 of the Constitution.
President Md. Sahabuddin appointed him to this position on Saturday (August 10) night.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Law announced the appointment of Md. Ashfaqul Islam as Acting Chief Justice. The coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement objected to this. They even rejected the appointment of Md. Ashfaqul Islam and announced another movement. At the same time, they demanded to appoint Syed Refat Ahmed as Chief Justice. In the face of their protest, the Law Ministry demanded, ‘The Chief Justice has not been appointed yet.’ The Ministry of Law informed the media about the appointment of Syed Refat Ahmed as Chief Justice at around 9 pm.
Earlier, 6 judges including Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan resigned due to the student movement. They sent their resignations to the Law Ministry on Saturday night. After that, the Ministry of Law issued a notification regarding the Chief Justice.
It is said in the notification that under the power given in Article 95 (1) of the Constitution, President Md Sahabuddin has appointed High Court Justice Syed Refat Ahmed as the Chief Justice of Bangladesh. This appointment will be effective from the date of swearing in.
Apart from the Chief Justice, the other five judges are M Inayetur Rahim, Md Abu Zafar Siddiqui, Jahangir Hossain, Md Shahinur Islam and Kashefa Hossain.
It should be noted that according to the rules, the Legal Adviser will send the resignation letters to the President through the Chief Adviser.
