South Asia calls for grid to share hydropower

The chief adviser to the interim government called for a South Asia grid to share the hydropower produced by Nepal and Bhutan Muhammad Yunus


He made the call in a meeting with social business groups on the sidelines of the Climate Conference in Baku on Wednesday (November 13). The matter was informed in a message sent by the Press Wing of the Chief Adviser. 

In the meeting, the Chief Adviser said that most of the hydropower potential of the Himalayan countries remained untapped due to lack of electricity grid connecting Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Bhutan. Officials in Nepal say the country has the potential to generate 4,000 megawatts of hydropower, which could help major countries like India and Bangladesh reduce their reliance on fossil fuels.

Professor Yunus said, Bangladesh can easily bring hydropower from Nepal, as it is only 40 miles away from Bangladesh. Nepal’s hydropower will also be cheaper. Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Bhutan should consider building the South Asian grid.

The chief advisor who attended the climate conference said that Bangladesh has given top priority to water management to prevent floods and increase the country’s economic growth, to make the best use of water.

He said, water is our main environmental problem. We need to manage water in such a way that it supports nature.

Stating that the interim government has emphasized on youth development and reforming the country’s education system, Professor Yunus said the government will organize a festival for the youth in January. When the country’s cricket board conducts its annual T20 BPL cricket tournament. FIFA president Gianni Infantino and IOC president Thomas Bach are expected to attend the festivities. A tournament for women’s football is also being planned.

He said, we are trying to celebrate in all parts of the country.

Professor Yunus also spoke about the reform initiatives of the interim government and the July-August coup that ended Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year long brutal dictatorship. He also spoke about the main issues of COP29 and Bangladesh’s current discussions on carbon credits.
