BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, “Several organizations, several groups have already started working to keep this interim government indefinitely. They will completely change, they will do all the reforms. Then there is no need for people, no need for parliament.”
He said these things at a discussion meeting titled “Bicameral Parliament: Structure of the Upper House” at the Dhaka Reporters Unity Auditorium in Segunbagicha of the capital on Monday.
Referring to a news in the national daily, Mr. Alamgir said, “A newspaper has given news citing a survey. I can’t say who gave this survey. Named after Brack Institute. I don’t know how they did the survey.”
“They say 80 percent of the people want this government to last as long as they want. I don’t know where they got this from. People will never accept it. I think I should think carefully about this kind of reporting. It should be noted that it does not create confusion,” said Mr. Alamgir.
The Secretary General of BNP mentioned that the interim government has taken responsibility for running the state and organizing the elections.
He said, “What my party believes in, the fundamental changes that need to be made are not possible without people’s opinion.” Parliament is the only place for that. So, it has to be a truly fair election.”
“Those who are elected in that election will decide what changes need to happen. We believe that the Parliament will decide whether to change it, or to rewrite it, or to completely abolish it and bring a new constitution,” said the BNP Secretary General.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir alleged that democratic institutions have been completely destroyed by the ‘fascist Awami League government’.
At the same time, he demanded their speedy removal, alleging that there are still those people in the administration of the interim government who ‘helped the fascist government’.
“I urge you to quickly identify them and remove them from the place where your policies are made, and create a structure where an impartial election can be held,” he said.
