Flash floods have caused extensive damage to crops in the country. Therefore, to deal with the crisis in the affected areas, the students of Sherebangla Agricultural University (Shekribi) have taken the initiative to provide free rice seedlings and vegetable seeds for the sake of agriculture and farmers.
They have already started the work of collecting seeds and preparing seedbeds for the production of rice seedlings in the research field of the university with the help of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute and Directorate of Agricultural Extension. Vegetable seedling production is also progressing.
University student Al Rakib said, agriculture is the main driving force of the economy. Therefore, the teachers and students of Shekribi have taken collective action to compensate the loss of the agricultural sector in the flood. We have taken up the initiative of seedling production and planting of cucurbits. Apart from this, on the basis of expert opinion and with the help of Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC), seeds of suitable rice BR-23, BR-75 and Bina-17 have been collected for flood affected areas. Already in agronomy field, four bighas of land has been sown and prepared for seedling production. In the future, the production of vegetable seedlings will be implemented keeping in view the rabi season.
