The chief adviser of the interim government. Muhammad Yunus commented that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina should be brought back to the country and face trial.
When asked whether he thinks that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina should be brought back to the country and face trial at an event in New York on Wednesday, Dr. Yunus threw back the question ‘why not?’ He then said, ‘If he has committed a crime, then he should be brought back to the country and face trial. You are speaking in favor of justice, then he should also face justice.’
The influential US newspaper New York Times organized the event titled ‘Climate Forward’.
Professor Yunus is now in the United States to attend the United Nations General Assembly session.
On August 5, Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to India in the face of intense student movement. Later, the students peacefully invited Nobel laureate economist Professor Yunus to take power and he accepted the invitation and was sworn in as the chief adviser to the interim government on 8 August.
The chief adviser said that he does not have any time frame as to when the elections will be held in Bangladesh. The commissions that have been formed are expected to recommend reforms in the coming months. A date will then be fixed for the election.
In response to a question. Yunus said, he has no plans to stand for election. He countered by asking ‘Do you think I will fight in the election?’
In response to a question regarding public lynching or mob justice, the chief adviser of the interim government said, “You are getting ‘exaggerated’ news about it from outside.” What is happening is being exaggerated.
He invited foreign journalists to come to Bangladesh and said that you report what you see with your own eyes.
“Climate Forward” in the event. Yunus said that as long as the world is stuck in the current economic system, the Paris Agreement on climate change will not work. The ‘Paris Agreement’ was made to limit the effects of climate change. This global agreement came into effect in 2016.
Economist Dr. Yunus said, this system (economic system) is maximum profit-oriented. The system is creating wealth for a small group. It is generating massive waste.
The interim government’s chief adviser said, ‘The economic system we have created is at the root of the destruction of the planet.’
He said humans have created a ‘suicidal civilization’.
Dr. Yunus said that whatever changes are made to the agreement, it will not make a difference unless the fundamental systems of the world are rearranged.
Dr. Yunus said, developing countries like Bangladesh should not bear the burden of climate damage caused by rich countries.
Scientists, innovators, rights activists and policy makers participated in the event titled ‘Climate Forward’.
