Secret meeting at residential hotel in Cox’s Bazar: 18 UP members arrested

Police arrested 18 UP members on charges of secret meeting in residential hotel. They were arrested from a resort in Kalatali, Cox’s Bazar at 12:30 pm on Friday.

According to the police, Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station raided the residential hotel Uni Resort in Kalatali area of ​​the city after receiving information about the secret meeting. During the police operation, many escaped but 40 people were arrested. However, after interrogation and scrutiny, those against whom the case is pending have been arrested.

Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Faizul Azim Noman confirmed the arrest to reporters.

This exchange meeting was organized by the initiative of Cox’s Bazar district branch of Bangladesh Union Member Organization (BIS).

Barrister Abdullah Al Mamun, Chairman of BISS and Supreme Court lawyer, was supposed to be the chief guest. Besides, the leaflet mentioned the presence of a political figure named Ataullah Khan.

Sadar Model Police Station was surrounded by police and detectives after receiving information that more than two hundred Union Parishad members and reserved women members were holding a meeting in the hilly areas and Cox’s Bazar at Uni Resort in Kalatali. After checking for three hours, the police took 18 suspicious people to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station. It is being investigated whether there is a case against them.

Two of the detainees were immediately identified. They are Mohammad Mia of Chaufaldandi Union in Sadar and Zahir Ahmed of Teknaf Upazila. Both of them are said to be involved in Awami League politics.

The detainees said that the discussion meeting of the ‘Member Association’, an organization consisting of UP members of 9 upazilas of the district, was going on. At that time, the police and more than half a hundred coordinators surrounded their hall room. Then the police and coordinators came and started searching.

According to the police, pro-Awami UP members were holding secret meetings and were arrested on the basis of this information.

Meanwhile, the siege of the hotel created panic in the surrounding area. Staying tourists are seen leaving the hotel.

Faizul Azim Noman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station, said the operation was conducted based on information that Awami League-backed UP members were holding secret meetings. There are many UP members here. Those against whom there is a case will be arrested. Those who have no case against them – have been released.

Zaheer Ahmed, UP member of Teknaf Sadar Union Parishad who was detained, said that today there was a discussion meeting of the member association of UP members of the district. About 70 of us UP members were present. There was a discussion about how to work during the country’s exhaustion. Suddenly the police and coordinators came in and arrested us. If we had a secret meeting, it wouldn’t have been such a big event at a roadside hotel. We are being harassed.

Salim, a member of UP from Maheshkhali area, who was released from the police, said that today we had a discussion meeting of our member association. People from all political parties were also there.

According to the sources, after the news reached the police, in the name of the discussion meeting, members of UP members of Awami League gathered at Hotel Uni Resort and are plotting against the government. On receiving such information, the police launched an operation.

Eyewitness sources said that many members of Awami League, friends of UP, participated in that meeting. However, there was no anti-government talk in that meeting. Rather, various proposals were put forward to support the reform of the state through UP members as local government representatives of Trinamool.

Police sources said that most of the UP members were caught during the police operation. However, as many as 40 UP members were detained in the hotel. After scrutiny, 18 accused in the case were arrested.
