Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said that no one can get away with committing a crime regarding the court order to seize the assets of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is independent. Judiciary is independent. If someone is convicted as a criminal in the trial, why would they go to protect him? No matter how powerful a person is, if he commits a crime he must be punished.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said these things in a press conference organized at the Awami League’s central office on Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital today at around 11 o’clock.
On Thursday, the court ordered the seizure (croc) of the immovable assets in the name of Benazir Ahmed, his wife and daughter. At the same time, their bank accounts have also been ordered to be frozen. Senior Special Judge of Dhaka Metropolitan Court Mohammad Assamach Jaglul Hossain gave this order. The court’s order came in the wake of the ACC’s plea. The ACC made this application to the court as part of the investigation into the assets of Benazir Ahmed.
Regarding Benazir Ahmed, Obaidul Quader said in a press conference that the matter should be seen, no matter how influential a person is, he can commit crimes and misdemeanors. It is being said, has the government shown courage in punishing their misdeeds in this regard?
General Secretary of Awami League mentioned that Sheikh Hasina government has the courage to punish the criminals. He said, ‘No one can get away with crime. Judiciary is independent, ACC is independent. If there is someone who is known as a criminal, why should we go to give him protection? He is a former IGP and a former army chief. The existing laws of our country will submit them to punishment. Because of this, there is no government to give protection to anyone.’
Obaidul Quader said, those who have been punished for the murder of BUET student Abrar Fahad, not most of them, but all of them belong to the BCL. But the government did not give them protection. Even Biswajit Das’ killers were hanged. Even there the government did not provide any protection.
General Secretary of Awami League said that individuals can commit crimes. The question is whether the government is giving him protection or not. Sheikh Hasina and her government have zero tolerance in this regard. No matter how influential the criminal, the punishment must be meted out to him.
Criticizing BNP Secretary General, Obaidul Quader said in a press conference that Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir talks a lot every day. His ‘human trauma’ seems to have reached a terrible level. He and BNP leaders are throwing stones in the dark. They are far from reality. They failed to prevent the election. The government failed to prevent the movement. Now they have neither here nor there. Awami League has gained power, not occupied it.
Addressing BNP, Obaidul Quader said that friends do not come and encourage them like before. Earlier, he used to wake up in the morning and go to the US embassy to have breakfast. He used to have breakfast there. Can not be found at night, where? At the US Embassy. Foreign friends will put them in power there. That dream is gone.
Before the press conference, the body of former Awami League member of parliament Manu Majumder was brought in front of the party office. Awami League paid tribute to him there.
In the press conference, Obaidul Quader said that Manu Majumder was an anti-publicity person.
