Seven people were killed in a police clash with protesters in Kushtia city. Hundreds were injured in this incident.
These incidents took place in Thanapara and Mazampur area on Monday afternoon. The injured are undergoing treatment at Kushtia General Hospital. Kushtia coordinator Tushar Ahmed Tuhin and Kushtia General Hospital supervisor Rafiqul Islam confirmed the matter.
The deceased are Babu (35) of Haripur area of Kushtia Sadar Upazila, Ashraful Islam of the same area, Abdullah (16), Yusuf (50), son of Lokman of Thanapara area of Kushtia city, Osama of Dahkula area, the other two are unknown.
Kushtia coordinator Tushar Ahmed Tuhin said that on Monday afternoon, the angry students of the anti-discrimination movement tried to take a stand at Thanapara intersection and Majampur intersection. At that time, the police started firing rubber bullets, tear gas and bullets at the protesters. Three people died on the spot in police firing in Thanapara. Four others later died while undergoing treatment at the hospital. More than two hundred protestors were injured in this incident. The condition of many under treatment in the hospital is critical. I demand fair, impartial investigation and exemplary punishment of this murder.
Rafiqul Islam, the supervisor of Kushtia General Hospital, said that the doctor in charge of the emergency department declared the three dead when they were brought to the hospital with bullet wounds. Four others later died while undergoing treatment. A total of seven people died. The condition of several people under treatment is critical.
