The storm has wreaked havoc in Feni. A pregnant housewife named Roksana Akhter was killed in a lightning strike. A sacrificial cow also died on the way to the market in the storm.
The incident took place on Saturday (June 15) at noon.
The deceased was identified as Roksana Begum, a resident of Uttar Mandia village in Chhagalnaiya upazila. In the storm, he was struck by lightning while bringing cows to the field. He later died on the spot. Officer-in-Charge of Chhagalnaiya Police Station Hasan Imam confirmed the matter.
The storm began around 2:30 p.m. Vehicular movement on Chhagalnaiya and Parshuram roads was disrupted due to falling trees. Police and fire service personnel are trying to remove the trees. Electricity cables were also snapped in many places in the storm.
Mirajul Islam, station officer of Chhagalnaiya Fire Service Station, said at least 50 trees were uprooted and uprooted in the storm from Kalapool to Rezumia of Chhagalnaiya. As a result, traffic came to a halt. On receiving the news, a team of them went to the spot and started working.
Nizam Uddin, officer-in-charge of Fulgazi Police Station, said a big tree was uprooted at Fulgazi Bazar on Feni-Parshuram road. A cow was also killed while being taken to the sacrificial market. Efforts are being made to cut the tree and normalize the traffic. Traffic was not normal till 6 pm, he said.
Feni Palli Bidyut Samity General Manager Hawlader Md. Fazlur Rahman said the storm caused extensive damage to Chhagalnaiya, Parshuram and Fulgazi. The electricity is disconnected. However, the extent of the damage is yet to be ascertained, he said.
