Residents of the gift house given by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Companiganj of Sylhet are in trouble. They are living in hunger. There is no food in the house. No clean drinking water. Even though the house was gifted, it was broken due to water. Tin was taken by storm. Water touching the rice. Everything in the house has been damaged by water. Now they spend the night under the open sky. But no one knows that. Most of the residents of the Mujibnagar Shelter Project lamented that no one kept them informed.
Rakhal Biswas said to Kalbela, ‘I am in a lot of trouble. Drinking water, food and shelter—none. Everything is broken. I went to the shelter and saw that there was no room there either. Saving someone’s life by climbing into another person’s broken house. I don’t know what to do.’
Ali Akbar said, ‘There are no blankets, dishes. All washed away. Where to cook and what to eat? I have not received any help so far.
Nazrul Islam said, when this Mujibnagar was built, I told the Upazila Nirbahi officer that if it is like this, it will sink in normal water. He then said, it will be seen when the water comes. Actually this project is completely unplanned. There is no living environment here. The flood drowns everything in normal water.
Thousands of houses, educational institutions, mosques, temples, fish farms, rural roads and bazaars have been submerged in flood water due to heavy rains and landslides. Apart from this, cattle and birds have been washed away. Relief distribution continues but it is insufficient. No beef. Fish and fish fry have been washed away in the water. The sanitation system is also broken.
After being trapped in water for three days, many still did not go to safe shelter because of the illusion of houses and furniture. Many have taken shelter in relatives’ homes and 42 shelters.
Last Wednesday, State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief distributed food items among the flood-affected people of Companiganj Upazila of Sylhet. Mohibbur Rahman. Distributed these food items among the sheltered at Telikhal High School of Upazila. Among them were rice, dal, potatoes, salt, pepper and daily essential food.
According to upazila administration sources, 95 thousand 500 people of 113 villages of six unions are affected by flood. But 7 thousand 303 people went to the shelter. All roads in the upazila are under water except for one highway. People in remote areas cannot go out without boats. So far 71 metric tons of rice, 2.60 lakh taka and 300 packets of dry food have been distributed in the affected areas. However, the flood victims complain that the amount of relief is insufficient compared to the requirement.
