The United Nations has given a message of alarm about natural disasters. According to the agency, natural disasters will increase by 40 percent around the world by 2030 due to climate change. Marco Toscano-Rivalta, Head of the Asia and Pacific Division of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, gave this warning.
The United Nations has announced a ministerial conference of Asia-Pacific countries on the issue of natural disaster risk reduction at a press conference in Manila, the capital of the Philippines, on Friday (August 23). Marco Toscano Rivalta was present at this press conference.
It is known that this conference will be held in October. A total of 2,500 delegates from 62 countries in the Asia-Pacific region are expected to participate.
In yesterday’s press conference, Marco Toscano Rivalta said, “We have already moved away from the Sendai Framework agreement on reducing natural disasters around the world in 2015. Due to our various activities, the risk of natural disasters has increased rather than decreased in the last few years. For this reason, we need to increase our preparedness and skills to deal with natural disasters.
He also said that the United Nations expects the Philippines to be a leader in natural disaster risk reduction programs in the Asia-Pacific region. He also highlighted the arguments in favor of this expectation.
