Moral ideals should be strengthened through self-criticism

The Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University (DU) highlighted the importance of philosophy education in personal and collective life. Niaz Ahmad Khan said, we need to strengthen our moral philosophy and ideals through the practice of self-purification and self-criticism.


He said these things in the speech of the chief guest at the discussion meeting organized at Dhaka University on the occasion of World Philosophy Day on Thursday (November 21).

He said, various divisions are being created in the society now, the distance between people is increasing. As a result of this, various types of conflict, violence, anarchy and unrest are being created in the society. Such division is ultimately a defeat for humanity.

The DU Vice-Chancellor called upon the philosophers and philosophy researchers to play an effective role in resolving all the conflicts and divisions of the society with the message of peace.

Dhaka University Department of Philosophy, Gobind Dev Philosophy Research Center and Moral Development Center jointly observed the day through a day-long programme. This year the theme of the day was ‘Philosophy for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future’.

The chairman of the philosophy department, Professor Dr. Under the chairmanship of Shah Kawsar Mustafa Abul Ulai, Dean of the Faculty of Arts spoke as a special guest. Mohammad Chiddikur Rahman Khan.

Professor Akh M Yunus of the department presented the keynote paper entitled ‘Philosophy of 2024 Uprising in Bangladesh: Islamic Perspective’. Besides, associate professor of philosophy department. Kazi ASM Nurul Huda and Professor Maleka Akhter Chowdhury of Philosophy Department of Govt Titumir College spoke on the occasion. Professor Md. Nuruzzaman thanked.

Earlier, on the occasion of the day, a rally was taken out from the foothills of Aparajey Bengal with the participation of teachers and students of the department. The rally ends at the Student-Teacher Center. Besides, the souvenirs published on the occasion of the day were unveiled.

In 2002, UNESCO announced the celebration of World Philosophy Day. In 2005, the UNESCO General Conference decided to observe World Philosophy Day on the third Thursday of November every year. Since then, World Philosophy Day has been regularly observed in Dhaka University campus.
