Students of Patuakhali Isaac Model Degree College took part in the joyous procession after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in the mass uprising of students. Monirul Islam (19).
Monirul was shot in the back by the police during the joyous procession. Since then, he has been writhing in pain in the hospital bed. Monirul used to work as a salesman with a limited salary in addition to his studies due to his father’s illness. The family lived on his salary. Currently Monirul is under treatment and his family is spending days in poverty.
On Wednesday (August 21) afternoon, when we visited Patuakhali Medical College Hospital, it was found that Monirul is under treatment in bed number 45 of male surgery ward.
Monirul Patuakhali is the son of Motaleb Howladar of Thangai village in Jainkathi union of Sadar upazila. He is a 12th class student of 2025 batch of Patuakhali Eshak Model Degree College.
According to family sources, Monirul, the only son who grew up in poverty, joined Azat Enterprises as a salesman in Muktijoddha Market in Dhaka Mirpur-1 area last May to support his family in addition to his studies. He used to support his family by working for a salary of only 15,000 taka. On the call of the anti-discrimination student movement, Sarah took to the streets.
After several days of agitation, when Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister and fled to India in the mass uprising of the students on August 5, a joyous procession took place from Mirpur-1 to Mirpur-2. Monirul joined it. Police fired at the procession. When some people around were shot, Monirul turned back and tried to run away. Just then he was shot in the left rib. The students rescued Monirul who was shot and admitted him to the capital’s Kurmitola General Hospital.
Later, Monirul was admitted to the surgery ward of Patuakhali Medical College Hospital on the afternoon of August 7. Two days after admission to the hospital, the hospital authorities bear all the treatment expenses of the shot victim Monirul.
Monirul, who was shot, said, “After Sheikh Hasina ran away during the agitation for several days, when we went near Mirpur-2 with a happy victory procession, the police started shooting at us indiscriminately.” I fell to the ground after being shot in the back. Later some student brothers took me to the hospital. I went to the victory march and was attacked, I want justice for that.
Monirul’s father Motaleb Howladar said, I used to work as a mason. I cannot earn due to physical illness. The family runs on this boy’s money. In hospital for about 16/17 days after being shot in Polada. There is no market in this month. Beer luck duida maiya house, I don’t know what to do. If the government had arranged a kam kaise in my polladar, I could have lived on koida dil bhat.
Hospital supervisor Dr. Monirul’s treatment. Dilruba Yasmin Liza said, she has been under treatment in our hospital since August 7. Now he is much healthier than before. When we came to know that he was shot while participating in the anti-discrimination student movement, we made all his medical expenses free. Arrangements have been made to purchase his medicine through the social service officer at the hospital.
