Social media X has been banned in the South American country of Brazil. This information was given in a report of the British media BBC on Saturday.
X has been banned in Brazil after the country’s Supreme Court judge failed to name a new legal representative by the deadline, the report said.
Brazil’s Federal Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes has ordered an immediate and complete suspension of the social media platform popular X (formerly Twitter). The company has been asked to comply with the ban order until it complies with all court orders and pays fines.
The legal proceedings started last April. A judge then ordered the suspension of dozens of X accounts accused of spreading false information.
Justice Moraes said in the order that the X accounts accused of spreading disinformation were run by many supporters of former right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro. They must be blocked while under investigation. Company’s legal representatives will be held responsible for any account reactivation.
For this, an order was given to appoint a legal representative in the country. But Elon Musk didn’t hire anyone.
In the latest order, Judge Moraes ordered companies like Apple and Google to remove X from their app stores. It has even set a five-day deadline to block the use of pre-downloaded X apps on iOS and Android systems. Apart from this, he has also issued orders to impose a fine of Tk 50,000 on individuals or businesses who use VPN to access the platform.
Brazil’s telecommunications company told Reuters news agency it was tasked with suspending the platform. They are working. It is expected that the platform will no longer be active in Brazil within the next 24 hours.
In response to such a decision, the owner of X, Elon Musk, said that freedom of speech is the basis of democracy. An unelected judge in Brazil is undermining it for political purposes.
