Adviser on law, justice and parliamentary affairs of the interim government. Asif Nazrul said the interim government would remain in power for as long as needed, balancing the desire for reforms and the desire for fresh elections.
He said this in response to a question from reporters at the secretariat on Saturday morning.
Asif Nazrul said that there has been no talk about the tenure of the interim government. One thing Kindly should keep in mind is that the political parties will expect elections as soon as possible, and the common people of this country will expect the government to make some necessary reforms.
He said, because we have seen in the past that various state institutions including Election Commission, Police, Judiciary, Anti-Corruption Commission and even public universities have been tried as a way to torture the people. We have received some good services from all these institutions. There are some good people in these institutions. But the whole system was set up in such a way that these institutions became a terror for dissenters, people exercising fundamental rights. People want this reform. We will stay as long as necessary, balancing the desire for reform with the desire for new elections. Not more, not less.
Asif Nazrul said, personally if I say I miss my university teaching life, I miss my open free life. My personal opinion is that as soon as possible I can finally go back to my life, which I personally enjoy much more. So this is my personal opinion. But from a place of responsibility, I am here and our other advisers will try to fulfill the responsibility for which we came here.
He also said that you know the role of Election Commission. If overhauling is not done here, then the government that comes in the future will use these institutions in that way. Our past experience is not good news.
