At least 10 children have died after a fire broke out in the children’s ward of a medical college in Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi district, India. It is feared that the death toll may increase. The accident happened on Friday night local time. News from NDTV.
District Magistrate (DM) Avinash Kumar said that the fire broke out at the Neonatal Intensive Care Center (NICU) of Maharani Lakshmi Bai Medical College around 10:45 pm on Friday. The fire is initially believed to have started from an electrical short circuit.
Sachin Mahar, head of the hospital, said there were 54 children admitted when the fire broke out. Many children were trapped in the fire. The trapped children were rescued with the help of firemen. Efforts were made to put out the fire from the start. But the fire spread quickly because of the excess oxygen in the room. Many children have been rescued. 10 children died. Injured children are being treated.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has already inquired about the fire and directed the concerned officials to ensure proper treatment of the injured. The police have ordered to report the fire within 12 hours.
