Highway blockade in Faridpur due to postponement of labor union elections

In Faridpur, transport workers blocked the highway for three hours by burning tires to protest against the postponement of triennial elections of Motor Workers (Motor Sramik) Union. The workers protested on the Dhaka-Barisal highway in front of the new bus stand in Faridpur city around 2:30 on Thursday.

More than two hundred workers blocked the traffic by laying bricks on the road and setting a tire on fire. At half past six in the evening they lifted the siege. The election was supposed to be held tomorrow, Friday.

Around 3:30 pm on Thursday, going to the new bus stand area of ​​Faridpur, it was seen that more than two hundred workers are guarding with wood and sticks. They do not allow any kind of vehicles to cross that area. At that time, two easy bikes tried to travel through that road, but they were caught and returned in front of the police. But the police is not stopping them. However, two easy bikes carrying patients are being allowed to pass by the blocking workers on the words of the police.

Later Faridpur Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Hasanuzzaman spoke to the officials of the district administration and assured to solve this problem. The workers then lifted the blockade around 6:30 pm.

Due to this blockade, the people of all walks of life through that road suffered greatly. However, long-distance vehicles have moved through the city bypass. Nurse Shamima Nasreen (34) of Faridpur Diabetic Association said, ‘My home is Rajbari. i’m going home With three bags. I am thinking how to go now.’

Another passerby Sujoy Karmakar (29) said, ‘We are not worried about whether the workers were elected or not. But why do we have to suffer?’

Talking to the workers, it is known that the triennial election of Faridpur Motor Workers Union is scheduled to be held on Friday. However, residents and workers of the city’s South Komarpur Mahalla. Mahabubuddin Mollah filed an application in the Second Labor Court of Dhaka objecting to this election. In this context, the chairman district and session judge in that court. Abdul Hamid banned the election last Wednesday. In protest, the workers are carrying out this blockade program.

Faridpur traffic police inspector Tuhin Lashkar said that despite the blockade, vehicles are running on that road at a limited level. The election commissioner and labor leaders have decided to discuss this matter with the district commissioner.
