In the groundbreaking speech given in Bengal at the session of the United Nations General Assembly, he highlighted the context of the anti-discrimination student movement that took place last July-August and the contribution of the students in the mass uprising.
In the speech given at the 79th session of the General Assembly. Muhammad Yunus brought up the heroism of the people’s uprising in front of the people of the world and said that this movement of Bangladesh will inspire people from different parts of the world to stand for freedom and justice in the coming days.
He delivered this speech at the General Assembly Hall of the United Nations Headquarters at 10 am local time in New York. The Chief Adviser in his speech highlighted how the students of Bangladesh stood up against fascism and made a successful coup and sowed the seeds of new dreams among the people.
Pointing out that the revolutionary changes took place in Bangladesh in July-August under the leadership of the students, Professor Yunus said, ‘In view of this incident, today I was able to attend this great parliament of the world community. The immense power of our masses, especially the youth, has opened the door to a new possibility of radical transformation of our existing state structures and institutions.’
Highlighting the context of mass uprising, he also said that the movement of students and youth was basically an anti-discrimination movement in the beginning. Gradually it turned into a mass movement. After that, the whole world watched in amazement how the entire people of Bangladesh stood firm against dictatorship, oppression, discrimination, injustice and corruption on the streets and through social media.
We are overwhelmed by the wisdom, courage and conviction shown by the youth of Bangladesh. Yunus said, ignoring the gunshots, these young people stood to receive their chests. The youths strongly voiced against the illegal state power. Schoolpadua teenagers also sacrificed their lives without hesitation. Hundreds of people have lost their sight forever.
He said, our mothers, day laborers and countless people of the city shouldered their children on the streets. Ignoring the scorching sun, rain, fear of death, they overcame the sinister conspiracy to manipulate the state machinery for a long time against true and just aspirations. As far as we know, we have lost more than eight hundred lives in this people’s movement at the hands of dictatorial forces.
The Chief Adviser also said in his speech that we have been liberated from an autocratic and undemocratic regime through the indomitable determination and conviction of the students. He expressed hope that Bangladesh will be elevated to the status of a responsible nation in the world community through their joint decision.
He said that the people of Bangladesh, especially the youth, have fought and sacrificed generations for a fair, inclusive and effective democracy.
The Chief Adviser of the Interim Government said that the development of the Bangladesh state was due to people’s deep belief in liberalism, pluralism and secularism. The values that our masses fought for in 1971 have been taught afresh by our ‘Generation G’ many years later. We saw this in the language movement of 1952 when Bengali was established as the mother tongue.
Professor Yunus concluded his speech by praising the youth, the heroes of the mass uprising of Bangladesh. He said, the youth has proved that the intention to uphold the freedom, dignity and rights of people is not an ambition. Rather, it is definitely deserved by everyone.
In his speech, he urged the people of the world to participate in the new journey of Bangladesh, saying that our students have freed us from an autocratic and undemocratic regime through their indomitable determination and conviction. I call upon the world community to re-engage with the new Bangladesh to realize our liberation and democratic aspirations. Professor Yunus urged the international community to increase its support and cooperation to Bangladesh in realizing its intention to emerge as a just and inclusive democratic society by achieving democracy, rule of law, equality and prosperity.
Referring to the assumption of responsibility of the interim government, Nobel Peace Prize winner Prof. Yunus said, “For the reconstruction of the state structure that has become miserable, our youth and the vast masses of the country have agreed to entrust me and my advisory council with a great responsibility of running the government.”
He said, after assuming office, we see with deep astonishment and dismay how rampant corruption has reduced a functioning democratic system to rubble. How the key institutions of the state were kept captive in the cycle of brutal partisanship, how the people’s wealth was ruthlessly looted, how a special interest group unjustly seized all trade and commerce and freely smuggled the country’s wealth abroad. In short, justice, ethics and morality disappeared at every stage. Professor Yunus said, in such a situation, we have been entrusted with the responsibility of reorganizing the country and returning the state system desired by the people. Right now, our main goal is to correct the mistakes of the past and build a competitive and strong economy and a just society.
Dr. Yunus mentioned in his speech that in the current changing situation all political parties are now able to express their opinions freely.
The Chief Adviser said, we are determined to uphold and protect the fundamental rights of people. It is our aim that the people of our country will speak freely, assemble without fear, vote and elect the person of their choice. We are also committed to preserving the independence of the judiciary and consolidating media freedom, including in the cyber domain.
Mentioning that Bangladesh will continue to actively participate and contribute to multilateral world structures including the United Nations, he said that our government is determined to uphold all the international, regional and bilateral agreements that Bangladesh is a party to.
Regarding bilateral relations with various countries, the Chief Advisor said, Bangladesh is interested in maintaining friendly relations with all countries of the world on the basis of mutual respect, dignity and preservation of interests. Highlighting the various steps taken by the interim government since assuming office, he said, in just seven weeks, our government has taken various important steps.
Calling for action against the perpetrators of crimes against humanity in Gaza, he said, the ongoing atrocities against the Palestinian people must be stopped immediately. The Chief Adviser said that in today’s multifaceted crisis, human rights are being undermined on a large scale as a result of war and conflict.
He said, despite the concern and condemnation of the world, the genocide in Gaza is not stopping. The existing reality of Palestine is not only a concern for Arabs or Muslims but it is a concern for the whole of mankind. non
Professor Yunus said, as a human being, the life of every Palestinian is priceless. All those involved must be held accountable for the crimes against humanity committed against the Palestinian people.
Calling for a ceasefire, he said, Bangladesh is calling for a complete ceasefire immediately to get rid of the ongoing atrocities on the people of Palestine, especially the cruelty that the world is witnessing against women and children. A two-state solution can bring sustainable peace in the Middle East, so Professor Yunus requested the international community, including the United Nations, to take initiatives for its implementation now.
Dr. highlighting the Russia-Ukraine war. Yunus said that many people have lost their lives in the ongoing war in Ukraine for the past two and a half years. The impact of this war is universal. Its impact is felt even in the economy of Bangladesh. We therefore call on both sides to resolve the conflict through dialogue and an end to the war.
