Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister on Monday afternoon after receiving information from the intelligence agency that ‘when the situation has gone out of reach, thousands of students are entering the Ganobhaban’. After leaving the post of Prime Minister, he quickly fled by air. Hasina left the country with her sister Sheikh Rehana. However, he was not at all ready for this decision at first. Rather, he tried to handle the situation till the last moment. Even on Monday morning, Hasina talked about the use of force in a meeting with various forces.
He held a meeting with the top officials of various forces from 10:30 am that day. The meeting lasted for about an hour. He said to use more force to remove the agitators from the road. He did not agree to resign.
A few leaders including one of his advisers tried to explain the day before the incident ie Sunday night. They said, in this situation, handing over power to the army is the only way. But Sheikh Hasina did not want to accept it on Sunday night. Instead, he asked to arrange a stricter curfew from Monday morning. But the situation started to change after 9 am on Monday. Ignoring the curfew, thousands of people took to the streets. By 10 o’clock, the gathering on the streets of Dhaka began to grow.
At around 10:30 am, three army chiefs and the Inspector General of Police were called to Gana Bhaban. Sheikh Hasina criticized the top officials. He said that the agitators are putting red paint on military vehicles. Why aren’t forces getting tougher? He appreciated the role of the police. But the inspector general also said that it is not possible to take a strict stand like this. The situation is getting out of hand.
After that they tried to convince Hasina. But Hasina still did not want to accept it. After that, the officials spoke to Rehana in another room. He was requested to convince Hasina. Once the officials also spoke to Hasina’s son Sajib Wazed Joy on the phone. Hasina then talked to her son. He then agreed to resign. He wants to record a speech to the nation.
It was at this time that information came from intelligence that a large crowd was approaching the Gana Bhavan. As a result, Hasina was not allowed to record the speech. Asked to be ready to leave Ganobhaban in 45 minutes.
After a while, Hasina went to the helipad of the old airport in Tejgaon. Some of their belongings were carried there in a chopper. After completing the resignation formalities, Hasina left the country in a military helicopter.
