Floodwaters have receded in many areas of Akhaura and Kasba upazilas of Brahmanbaria as of Saturday, August 24, though over 300 people remain stranded.
From Friday morning, the sun has been shining across various parts of the district with no heavy rainfall, including Subarnachar.
Md Monjur Rahman, executive engineer of the Brahmanbaria District Water Development Board said that the water level of the Haora River continues to drop. As of Saturday morning, the water level has decreased by another centimetre, now flowing 51 centimetres below the danger mark.
Over the past 36 hours, the water level has fallen by 24 centimetres, with the current level at 5.54 metres at the Gangasagar point. This has improved the flood situation in Akhaura, although no data is available for the Salda River in Kasba due to the absence of a gauge station, he added.
Kasba Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Shahriar Moktar said that the floodwaters in Kasba have begun to recede, with a reduction of one to one and a half feet over the past two days. Despite this, floodwaters persist in some areas.
On Saturday, a total of 1,368 families in Kasba will receive seven tons of rice, 250 packets of dry food, and water purification tablets. It is hoped that the flood situation will improve rapidly, he added.
According to reports, the rise in water levels in the Haora River, which flows from the hills of Tripura state in India through Agartala, has contributed to the flooding in Akhaura.
Similarly, the increase in the Salda River at the Kasba border has affected both Akhaura and Kasba upazilas. The flood has impacted 47 villages in Akhaura, affecting 1,697 families and 49,209 people, and 26 villages in Kasba, affecting 2,350 families.
Akhaura UNO Ghazala Parveen said that the water level in the upazila is decreasing. Compared to Friday, it has dropped by an additional 4 centimetres. Many affected individuals have been relocated, and the number of shelter centres has been reduced from 11 to 7.
