A person has been diagnosed with H5 bird flu for the first time in British Columbia, Canada. The juvenile suspect is being treated at a children’s hospital. Reuters news
Authorities said in a statement that no other H5 bird flu cases have been identified in the province so far. The identified patient is ‘very likely’ to have contracted the virus through an animal or bird. The source of the infection and whether anyone came in contact with the patient is under investigation.
Bonnie Henry, one of the leading doctors in the province of British Columbia, said in a statement, ‘This is a rare case. This is the first case of H5 bird flu in the province of British Columbia or in Canada as a whole. A very small number of such patients have been identified in the United States and other countries outside of Canada. And for this reason, we are conducting a thorough investigation to uncover the source of infection of this disease in British Columbia.’
