56 kilometers of railway lines in the eastern part of the railway were submerged in flood water during the worst flood in memory. Out of this, 13 km of three railways were heavily damaged. Train services were closed for four days. According to the concerned engineers of Railway Eastern Zone, it may take about 6.5 crore tk to repair the damaged railway track.
According to railway information, the worst damage was the 7 km stretch of Chittagong-Dhaka railway from Fazilpur to Feni via Kalidah. This 7 km railway is completely destroyed. About 56 kilometers of railway tracks of Chittagong-Dhaka, Chittagong-Nazirhat, Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar, Laksam-Noakhali route were submerged in water. Of this, 15 km of the 49 km Laksam-Noakhali railway track is still under water. Renovation work has started. A train is running on a line. The other line is being repaired. Due to which 15 trains of this route are closed.
As the railway track was submerged in Fazilpur area of Feni due to flood water, the train movement between Chittagong and the whole country was stopped. After being closed for four days, limited train services started on Dhaka-Chittagong from the night of August 26. The next day, from August 27, all trains continued as per normal schedule. Later, when the flood situation worsened, the Dhaka-Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar route was closed for three days from August 22. After three days on August 24, the train service started on the Cox’s Bazar-Chittagong route.
Divisional Engineer of Eastern Railway-1 Rafi Md. Imtiaz Hossain said that 20 to 25 kilometers of railway track from Fenir Muhuriganj to Gunavati of Chittagong-Dhaka railway was sunk. Among them, 6 to 7 km railway line from Fazilpur-Kalidah to Feni (Chittagong to Dhaka line) has been completely destroyed. As a result, this 7 km railway line has to be constructed anew. However, the railway from Dhaka to Chittagong is good. Repairing the 7 km damaged railway track via Fazilpur-Kalidah to Feni may cost as much as tk 3 crore.
