Six lakh people of Sylhet hoping for good news: Several lakh people of Sylhet have been stuck in water since May 27. During this period, new areas were flooded three times due to heavy rains and landslides. 25 km flood defense embankment of the district has been damaged. In this situation, the water coming down from the mountains of India is entering the locality at a high speed through the damaged part of the dam. Due to this, the flood situation in South Surma, Balaganj, Osmaninagar, Jokiganj upazilas has further deteriorated. The district administration said that all the upazilas of Sylhet have been flooded till Friday. About six and a half lakh people are stuck in water. Ten thousand people are staying in the shelter.
Sylhet was rainless all day yesterday. However, the Meteorological Office says that there is no good news now, there is a possibility of heavy rain in Sylhet region for the next five days. Due to floods, Sylhet has faced huge losses in various sectors including roads, agriculture, fisheries, infrastructure. The loss is also in the education sector. As a result of the floods, the HSC examination for the Sylhet division, which began on June 30, was delayed by about 8 days. However, teaching is still closed in about five hundred educational institutions of the district. Sylhet Meteorological Department Assistant Meteorologist Shah Md. Sajib Hossain said, moderate to heavy rainfall is likely for another three days.
Sylhet executive engineer Deepak Ranjan Das said that almost all the rivers in Sylhet are overflowing. As a result, the water coming down from the upstream is slowly coming down. Floods are becoming chronic as rivers and streams are full of water. Apart from this, water is easily entering the locality as the dam is damaged. The damage and suffering is increasing.
Deterioration of flood situation in Kurigram: The flood situation has further deteriorated in Kurigram. Banvasi families live a subhuman existence in homesteads sheltered in bamboo lofts, boats and banana tree rafts. There has been an acute shortage of fodder. The communication system has been cut off under the road. New areas are getting flooded every day. About two hundred villages of 40 unions in the lower reaches of the river have been inundated. About 70 thousand people are trapped in water.

Brahmaputra water level is 78 cm at Chilmari point, 72 cm at Nunkhawa point and 80 cm at Hatia Union point; At Phulbari point in Dharla, the flow is 73 cm above the danger level. However, the water of Dharla, Teesta and Dudhkumar in Kurigram Sadar has decreased and is flowing below the Vipatseema.
DC Mohammad Saidul Arif said that so far 173 metric tons of rice and 10 lakh taka have been allocated for Banvasis in 9 upazilas. There are 600 metric tons of rice and 30 lakh taka in stock, which will be distributed in stages.
Deterioration of flood situation in Jamalapur: The overall flood situation of Motherganj has deteriorated due to the continuous increase in the water of Yamuna. At Bahadurabad ghat point at around 11 am yesterday, the water of the Yamuna flowed 93 cm above the water level. The water is entering the vast town. Village after village is sinking. The flood affected people in the lowlands and Char areas have suffered. In these areas there is a shortage of clean drinking water, dry food and cattle fodder.
Meanwhile, as the water level of various rivers in the district continues to rise, water is entering the road overflowing in various areas. At least 35,000 people are trapped in water due to flash floods. Six unions of Islampur were the most inundated. Apart from this, a total of 18 unions including three in Dewanganj, four in Melandah upazila and two in Motherganj were flooded. 56 primary schools are closed. Along with the increase in flood water, human suffering also started to increase. In this direction, two roads were broken in Dewanganj. The road communication system of three upazilas has been cut off. Rafiqul Islam, executive engineer of Jamalpur Paubo, said that the water may continue to rise for the next four days. There is a possibility of moderate flood this time.
Sunamganj flood situation unchanged: In Sunamganj, the water of Surma river is flowing 12 cm below the danger level, but the flood situation remains unchanged due to Thursday night’s rain. In the last 24 hours, the water in Surma has decreased by only two centimeters. As many roads in the lower areas are under water, people are suffering.
According to the information of the district administration, about 4 lakh people are flood-affected in the district and have been kept ready in 777 shelters. 1,600 people are staying in 50 shelters.
Mamun Howladar, executive engineer of Sunamganj Paubo, said that there is a possibility of moderate and heavy rainfall for two more days. Surma water may increase. However, the flood situation will not worsen.
Tens of thousands of people trapped in water in Tangail: The water of all the rivers including the Yamuna in Tangail is rising due to continuous rains and the hill slopes coming down from the upstream. Hundreds of thousands of people have been trapped in water by flooding the lower areas. Yesterday morning, according to the information of district Paubo, the water of Brahmaputra-Yamuna river is 20 cm above the danger level, the water of Jhenai river is 78 cm above the danger level. As a result, thousands of people in some villages of Bhuyapur, Kalihati and Sadar upazilas of the district have become waterlogged. Apart from this, along with the erosion, the cropland has sunk. People are in trouble due to rising water in the locality. Along with that, there is a fear of snakes among the people of flood-affected areas.
Teesta Barrage Dam Collapse: The dam built in Chandimari to protect Hatibandha town next to Teesta Barrage, the country’s largest irrigation project, has collapsed. If the dam is not repaired quickly, it may collapse. It is likely to reverse the course of Teesta river. Asfaud Daula, Executive Engineer of Teesta Barrage Dalia in Paubo, said that the erosion occurred suddenly. Dropping of Jio bags has started on an urgent basis.
30,000 people trapped in water in Gaibandha: As the water in the river continues to rise, teaching has been suspended in 63 primary schools in Char and lower areas of Sundarganj, Saghata and Phulchhari upazilas including Gaibandha Sadar. For a few days, the river water has risen and flooded the grasslands and lower areas of Gaibandha. In 20 unions of Gaibandha Sadar, Sundarganj, Phulchari and Saghata upazilas, at least 30 thousand people are trapped in water. Various crops including jute, nuts and vegetables have been submerged in large areas. Roads are submerged. The victims are in trouble with the family’s children and old people and domestic animals.
According to Gaibandha Paubo, at 3 pm on Friday, Brahmaputra river water was flowing above the danger level of 88 cm at Teestamukh point in Phulchhari and 38 cm above the danger level at New Bridge Point of Ghaghat district town.
Yamuna water continues to rise in Sirajganj: Yamuna water is flowing above 38 cm in Sirajganj. At 6 am yesterday, the water level in the Yamuna rose by 15 cm in the Raksha Dam hard-point area of Sirajganj city. Due to rising water in Sirajganj Sadar, Kazipur, Chauhali, Shahjadpur, Belkuchi, the lower areas along the river are getting flooded.
