All the rivers in Kurigram continue to rise due to the extra heavy rains and the downpours in the upper hills of India. 320 Char Dwipchar and the lower areas of 9 upazilas of Brahmaputra River have been inundated with flood water as the water of Brahmaputra River has crossed the limit. About half a million people are trapped in water. Besides, in Sirajganj, the water of Yamuna has flowed over Bipatseema and entered the locality. Meanwhile, the lower areas of Chandanish Upazila and Jamalpur of Chittagong have been flooded.
The representative of Kurigram also said that the seasonal crops along with the houses in the flooded areas in the district have been submerged in the flood water. Representatives of Ulipur and Chilmari said that about 200 families became homeless in Chilmari upazila due to river erosion. About 40,000 people from four unions are trapped in water in Ulipur. This has caused severe food crisis in the area.
According to Rangpur Bureau, severe erosion has started in Teesta river due to continuous rain. In this, the houses of hundreds of families along the banks of Teesta in Gangachra, Kaunia and Pirgacha upazilas of the district have disappeared under the river. In addition, thousands of families have become watertight.
Sunamganj representative said that the second round of flood situation in Sunamganj has improved somewhat. However, if there is heavy rain for a few more days, the water level of the river may rise again, said the District Water Development Board. Meanwhile, more than three hundred people of Tahirpur upazila are trapped in water.
Sirajganj representative said that the water level of Yamuna river has crossed the limit in Sharraksha Dam area, which is increasing by 2 cm per hour. Water entered the lower areas of the river banks and char area of Sirajganj Sadar, Kazipur, Belkuchi, Chauhali and Shahjadpur upazilas. In this situation, the District Water Development Board is afraid of short-term flooding. Over a few days of erosion, hundreds of houses in Shahjadpur, Kazipur and Chauhali upazila’s Pachil and surrounding areas have disappeared under the river bed.
Chandanish (Chittagong) representative said that the construction areas of two municipalities and eight unions of Chandanish upazila have been flooded due to continuous rain. The seed bed of newly planted Aman rice has sunk under the water. The crops of the fields have been destroyed by water.
Islampur (Jamalpur) representative said that the water of various rivers in Jamalpur is increasing. The lower areas of the district are getting flooded. Already, water has started rising in different places of four upazilas on roads and houses. Thousands of residents of some unions have been waterlogged.
According to the Sylhet Bureau, the flood situation of the third round that started last Monday in Sylhet has not improved. Even on Thursday afternoon, Surma and Kushiara rivers were above the danger line. 6 lakh people in different upazilas are stuck with water. More than 10,000 people are staying in shelters.
Saghata and Sundarganj representatives of Gaibandha said that 15 villages of Saghata upazila were flooded after the flood control dam broke in Bharatkhali’s Barmatair area on the eastern side of Yamuna river. At least 20,000 people have been trapped in water. Farmers’ jute, cown and vegetable fields have been submerged. As the water level of Teesta river rises, flood water is entering the river banks of six unions of Sundarganj upazila. About 25,000 people have been trapped in water.
