Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India on August 5 in the face of mass protests. India then offered him temporary asylum. However, even after 100 days of Sheikh Hasina taking refuge there, Delhi still could not arrange a permanent stay in the third country.
Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had to end 15 years of authoritarian rule through a student uprising. On August 6, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said, “After a meeting with the top security officials of Bangladesh, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina decided to resign. At very short notice she (Sheikh Hasina) seeks permission to come to India temporarily. At the same time, we also received a request for ‘flight clearance’ from the Bangladeshi authorities.” In such circumstances she (Sheikh Hasina) reached Delhi.
Meanwhile, both India and Bangladesh want to regularize bilateral relations. A meeting was also held between the Foreign Minister of India and the Foreign Adviser of Bangladesh. Both sides agreed to bring the meetings between the two countries which have been suspended, on a regular basis.
However, Sheikh Hasina has become a thorn in the relationship between the two countries. Dhaka has made it very clear that Sheikh Hasina’s speech or statement in India will not be helpful for bilateral relations. Meanwhile, Sheikh Hasina’s directive conversations with leaders and activists about Bangladesh are often leaked; Which Bangladesh is not taking well at all. Bangladesh is getting the message from India that Sheikh Hasina is more important to Delhi than bilateral relations with its neighbour.
India is also facing questions about Sheikh Hasina. The world knows that India has sheltered those who ordered the killing of thousands of unarmed people in Bangladesh. After August 5, Indian diplomats often face questions about Sheikh Hasina’s current situation in bilateral meetings or during tea chats on the sidelines of multilateral meetings, which is embarrassing for them. As a result, Delhi has not yet made it clear as to why Sheikh Hasina is staying in the country.
In the current situation, Sheikh Hasina will have to stay in India permanently. After fleeing from Bangladesh, Delhi tried to provide shelter to Sheikh Hasina in several countries including United Kingdom, Finland, Belarus, United Arab Emirates (UAE). India wanted to confirm Sheikh Hasina’s final destination in Russia’s neighboring countries. Because Delhi wants to send Sheikh Hasina to a country which does not care much about the International Criminal Court (ICC). But still no result has come.
Currently Sheikh Hasina’s younger sister Sheikh Rehana, the country’s minister Tulip Siddique and their family live in the UK. Sheikh Rehana’s son Radwan Mujeeb Siddique Bobby’s wife Pepe Siddique is a citizen of Finland. Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajib Wazed Joy lives in the United States. Sheikh Hasina’s daughter Saima Wazed Putul is the Regional Director of the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office in India.
