The holy Eid-ul-Azha or Eid-ul-Azha will be observed on Monday (June 17). Cucumber and green chilli are being sold at unusual prices in the market centering Eid-ul-Azha. Suddenly, the price of these two products has almost doubled in a span of one or two days. Cucumber is being sold at Tk 100 to 120 and green chilli at Tk 300 to 320 per kg.
This information was found on Sunday (June 16th) after visiting various areas including Segunbagicha, Khilgaon, Mugda and Motijheel in the capital.
Buyers complained that the prices of cucumber and green chili have been increased by syndicating before Eid. Salad is everyone’s favorite with meat on Eid. Besides, green chillies are a daily commodity. Capitalizing on these issues, the sellers have increased the prices of the two products. However, opportunistic traders are charging higher prices on the pretext of rain and less supply during Eid.
Abdul Alim, a vegetable seller at Khilgaon in the capital, said the prices of cucumber and green chili have increased again. It rained two days ago, and before Eid, car rentals are high and supplies are low. Two days ago, one palla (5 koji) green chili was bought wholesale at Tk 800; Today it was bought for over 1100 rupees, including costs. So I am selling it at Tk 300 per kg.
“I sold cucumber for Tk 60 two days ago. Today, the price of hybrid cucumber is Tk 100 and local cucumber is Tk 130. However, the price of lemon has not increased. Beef is being sold at Tk 500 per kg. Beef is being sold at Tk 500-520 per kg. Normal size tomatoes are being sold at Rs 120 per kg. Tomatoes are being sold at Tk 500-520 per kg.
Abu Sayeed, who came to the vegetable market to shop, said, “I bought cucumber at Tk 100 per kg. And one poya (250 grams) of green chili took 80 taka. Last Thursday, I bought cucumber for Tk 60. At that time, a poya chili was 40 rupees. That means the price has doubled on Eid. They always do this and increase the price of Eid. There’s no point in complaining. Buyers always cut their pockets, and traders count profits.
Although the prices of cucumber and green chili have increased, the demand for other vegetables has decreased slightly on the eve of Eid. In the current market, cabbage is being sold at Tk 70 per kg, bitter gourd at Tk 80 per kg, carrot at Tk 80 per kg, papaya at Tk 50 per kg, okra at Tk 60 per kg, long brinjal at Tk 60 per kg, round brinjal at Tk 70 and potal at Tk 50 per kg. Besides, pumpkin is being sold at Tk 20-30 per piece and bottle gourd at Tk 50-60 per piece.
