Due to floods in Gaibandha, 63 primary schools in four upazilas have been closed. Gaibandha district primary education officer confirmed the matter on Friday (July 5). Shahidul Islam
This education officer said that four upazilas of the district have been affected by floods due to the increase of water in the rivers and streams of Gaibandhar for the last 3 days. Most of the educational institutions in the four flood-affected upazilas are surrounded by water. Some of these have seen water seeping into school grounds and classrooms, and in some areas roads have been submerged, cutting off access to schools. As a result, none of the teachers and students are able to go to school in those educational institutions. Because of this, teaching in 63 schools of four flood-affected upazilas has been stopped.
He also said that the schools in the flood-affected areas which have not risen yet have been kept ready for use as shelters, including 17 in Gaibandha Sadar Upazila, 11 in Sundarganj Upazila, 14 in Phulchhari Upazila and 21 in Saghata Upazila.
It is to be noted that due to the continuous rise of water in Gaibandhar’s rivers for the past few days, the paddy and low areas of Sadar Upazila, Sundarganj, Phulchari and Saghata Upazilas of the district have been flooded. Almost lakhs of people are trapped in water. The land of vegetables, jute and Aush paddy in different areas has been submerged .
