Battery-operated rickshaw drivers and traders protested with batons at Mirpur No. 10 in the capital.
At that time, apart from attacking some buses, the angry people also beat the pedal rickshaw drivers.
From 10 am on Sunday, they besieged Mirpur goal square No. 10.
Their protest is against the recent operation of the police to stop the movement of battery-powered rickshaws to reduce accidents on the roads.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Traffic Mirpur Division Deputy Commissioner Jasim Uddin said, ‘battery-powered rickshaw drivers and many people associated with this business have blocked the Mirpur No. 10 goal square. As a result, traffic is stopped in that area. They are doing this because of the recent police operation.’
The Deputy Commissioner said that before gathering at Mirpur No. 10 goal square, the protestors protested in several other roads including Kalshi in Mirpur. During this time they also beat pedal rickshaw drivers, attacked some buses. Later they came to Mirpur goal square number 10 and took a position.
He said, after waiting for about four hours with great patience, the police took legal action against the drivers in Mirpur-10 square in the presence of the local MP. Later they moved away from there and set fire to the road in Kalshi.
Last Wednesday, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said, ‘No battery-powered vehicle should run in Dhaka City. We have banned 22 highways. Not only a ban, measures should be taken so that it cannot continue.’
Electric three-wheelers are known by various names including Auto, Easybike. He blamed the movement of motorbikes and easy bikes on the road for the accident.
In that meeting with the minister at the BRTA building, the two mayors of Dhaka also gave their consent to stop the movement of these battery-powered vehicles in the city.
