According to the preliminary complaint, the woman doctor removed the kidneys of at least 15 to 16 people in the name of operation at a hospital named ‘Yartha’ in Noida city adjacent to the capital. He performed these operations as a member of the kidney smuggling group. Most of those whose kidney he removed are citizens of Bangladesh. These operations took place between 2021 and 2023.According to the police, this gang, active between Bangladesh and India, used middlemen or brokers to lure poor Bangladeshis to some hospitals around New Delhi. In those hospitals, doctors associated with the gang used to remove the kidneys of Bangladeshis.Several kidney trafficking rings are active in Delhi. Dr. Most of the gang that Vijaya Kumari was associated with were Bangladeshis. Delhi Police arrested three members of this gang from New Delhi last month. All of them are citizens of Bangladesh.Selling organs for money is prohibited and a punishable offense in India, like most countries in the world. However, if a person voluntarily donates a kidney or any other organ to someone, then it is legal. In this case, the name and identity of the donor and the recipient and other information have to be submitted to the authorities.According to the Delhi Police, the gang used to perform kidney operations only on victims from Bangladesh and provided various fake documents related to these operations to the Bangladesh High Commission in Delhi. The police also seized those documents.Dr. Vijaya Kumari is a senior consultant and kidney transplant surgeon at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi. He joined Indraprastha Apollo about 15 years ago as a junior doctor.Apart from Apollo, the visiting consultant and surgeon of Noida’s ‘Yartha’ hospital was also Dr. Vijaya Kumari Sunil Balian, additional medical superintendent of the hospital, said that none of the people whose kidneys he removed were patients of the hospital. As a visiting consultant, he could make recommendations to hospital authorities for admission of patients. All the 15-16 Bangladeshis whose kidneys he operated on were admitted on his recommendation.Dr. Apart from Vijaya Kumari, no other doctor of Indraprastha Apollo Hospital was found to be involved in the kidney trafficking ring. The hospital authorities suspended the doctor.
