Ujjal Chandra Chand, chairman of Bansati Union Parishad (UP) of Mymensingh’s Muktagacha, has been accused of strangulation in his private car. In this incident, the police arrested two people including the driver of Ujjal Chandra’s private car. The UP chairman alleged that this murder was attempted to snatch the 11 lakh rupees with him.
The incident took place at Muktagachar Ball road on Mymensingh-Tangail road yesterday at around 11:30 pm. On Friday afternoon, local residents held a human chain and protest rally to demand justice for the people involved in the protest against the attempt to kill the UP Chairman. UP Chairman Ujjal Chandra’s brother Rajeev Chandra has filed a case in the police station as the plaintiff in this incident.
According to police sources, Ujjal Chandra Chand went to Mymensingh yesterday to collect money from the sale of rice from his auto rice mill. After that, he was returning to Muktagacha in a private car with about 11 lakh taka. The driver started driving the car mysteriously after crossing Mantala bridge on Mymensingh-Tangail road. At one stage, two robbers who were already hiding in the back seat of the car grabbed Ujjal Chandra’s throat. To protect himself, the chairman bit the finger of one. In this, the robber died, but there was a scuffle with the other robber in the car. At one point, the driver dropped the car in the ditch on the side of the road. A robber escaped when passers-by rushed to the spot thinking it was a road accident. However, local people arrested the car driver Abdul Matin (23) and the robber Sujan Mia (24) and handed them over to the police.
Driver Abdul Matin is a resident of Monirambari area of upazila. Sujan Mia is a resident of Pakulia village in Sherpur district.
Muktagachha Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Farooq Ahmed said the robbers used to work in a workshop in Mymensingh. They were already familiar with UP Chairman’s driver. Two people were already hiding in the car with the help of the driver to rob the money. One escaped but the other was arrested. A knife was recovered from them.
UP Chairman Ujjal Chandra Chand said two robbers were already hiding in the back seat with the help of his driver. He realized this in the middle. He later survived with the help of passers-by. He thinks that the incident happened to rob him of 11.5 lakh rupees from the sale of rice. But the robbers could not take the money.
In protest of this incident, the followers of UP Chairman held a protest march in Muktagacha town around 4 pm today. Later a short rally was held in front of the local press club. Central member of Krishak Ali Sarkar, Vice President of Upazila Awami League Nayan Kumar Dey, Siddikuzzaman Siddique, Joint General Secretary of Upazila Awami League Helal Uddin Sarkar, Awami League leaders Saiful Islam Mondal, Borhan Uddin Akand and Morjina Akhtar spoke. The protesters demanded the arrest of those involved in the incident.
Farooq Ahmed, OC of Muktagachha police station, said that two people were arrested in the case and were handed over to the court this afternoon, seeking a seven-day remand. However, as the remand hearing was not held, the court ordered them to be sent to jail.
