Demand to make annual accounting of movable and immovable assets of government employees mandatory. The scope of black money laundering needs to be refined.
The ruling Awami League member of parliament AK Abdul Momen said that a section of the bureaucrats have become corrupt, thereby increasing the harassment of the people. The whole bureaucracy is sharing infamy for a few corrupt bureaucrats.
In the general discussion on the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2024-25 in the National Assembly on Thursday, former Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen also said that it is the need of the hour to make annual accounts of immovable and immovable assets of government employees mandatory. The reputation of the country is being ruined due to a few corrupt officials. Transparency, accountability and strict punishment in these matters will reduce corruption.
Abdul Momen said in an event in Dhaka in November 2020 when he was the foreign minister, government employees smuggle more money abroad.
Regarding the Bangladeshi citizens who have settled in Toronto, Canada, Abdul Momen said at that event, “In terms of numbers, many of our government employees have houses there and their children live there.”
On that day, Abdul Momen also said that out of the 28 reported cases of money laundering (in Canada), government officials and employees were the majority.
Although the Awami League government has not revealed the names of those 28 people who smuggled money.
Bad bank
Abdul Momen also mentioned in the Parliament yesterday that there are big questions among the common citizens about the increase in commodity prices, employment, revenue growth, rampant corruption and harassment of the administration. He said, the condition of the banking sector is already bad. It would have been possible to bring back the confidence of the public if there was a remedy in the budget. Rather, honest tax payers are disappointed with the announcement of 15 percent tax in the budget to whiten black money. He also mentioned that there is a need to improve the scope of laundering black money.
Abdul Momen said that the image of the government is being damaged due to corruption. Projects are not completed on time due to corruption, which increases cost and inconvenience to the public.
Former Foreign Minister Abdul Momen said that thousands of working people are migrating abroad legally and illegally every year because there is not enough employment in the country. Employment or entrepreneurship creation usually takes place in the private sector. For that they should have enough bank loan facility. To meet the budget deficit in this year’s budget, the government is taking a loan of Tk 1 lakh 37 thousand crores from the banking sector. This means that private investors can be deprived of loans.
Now people go to police: Home Minister
Participating in the budget discussion, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said that once upon a time, people were afraid to see the police. Now the police has come to the place of trust and faith of the common people. If any person calls 999, the police will be there, ambulance, fire service etc. will be there.
The Home Minister said that the police have now become the servants of the people. Now people go to the police. Similarly elite force RAB has become a place of public trust through their skills and capabilities. Militant suppression has been possible due to police as well as RAB.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said, those who are being arrested are being arrested for specific crimes and charges. No one was arrested for political reasons. Those who commit terrorism, those who commit terrorism with political gestures, are being caught.
