Floods in Sylhet are prolonged, suffering is increasing

The ongoing flood situation in Sylhet is prolonged due to torrential rains coming down from India. Flood water is decreasing in some areas and increasing in some areas. As a result, the suffering of Banvasi people is increasing. The water in Surma Kushiara is decreasing by a centimeter at some points and rising at other points. 

The suffering of millions of water-logged people has increased in various areas including Kurigram, Sherpur, Mirsarai of Chittagong. At Sariakandi in Bogra, the water of Yamuna River is flowing 32 cm above the Vipatseema. Due to the collapse of the dam in Kamalganj of Moulvibazar, the victims have to take shelter elsewhere. Banvasi people are in trouble with cows, goats, resources and children due to the increase of water in the rivers at an abnormal rate.

Sylhet, Jokiganj and Golapganj: At all points of Surma Kushiara water flowed above the flood limit on Thursday. As the water recedes from the upstream, new areas of the lowlands are being flooded. The flood situation in Sylhet is taking a long-term form as the river and the Howrah area are full of water. Various areas within the city remain waterlogged till Thursday morning. Many residents are staying in shelters as their homes are submerged in water. 

Many have moved back to their relatives’ houses. On May 29, heavy rains and landslides from upstream caused the first flood situation in Sylhet. After June 8, the situation became more normal. Then came the second shock on June 16. Flooding occurred in two upazilas bordering Sylhet due to landslides. Later there was flood in 13 upazilas of the district including the city. On June 19, heavy rains and landslides from upstream again caused floods in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts. Later it spread to Moulvibazar and Habiganj districts. The flood situation in Sylhet region started to improve from 25th June. In the meantime, since last Monday, the flood situation has become serious due to the heavy rains and the river’s water coming from upstream.

According to Sylhet district administration sources, out of 13 upazilas of Sylhet, there are no people in shelters only in Sylhet Sadar, Jaintapur and Companyganj upazilas. Flood water is receding in Goainghat, Kanighat, Jaintapur and Companyganj along the border. Suffering of people increased due to prolonged floods in Osmani Nagar, Balaganj, Fenchuganj, Biyanibazar and Dakshin Surma upazilas. Unannounced holidays are going on in more than a hundred educational institutions in Golapganj. Teachers and students are unable to come to these schools as the flood situation has not changed. As a result schools are locked.

Kurigram, Ulipur, Roumari, Chilmari and Phulbari: Millions of people in six upazilas along the banks of the river have become waterlogged due to the increase in the Brahmaputra river at an abnormal rate. Classes in 37 government primary schools have been suspended as a result of the floods. Two thousand 300 hectares of cropland is submerged and 83 medical teams have been formed at the union level with the help of the villagers. 500 metric tons of rice and 20 lakh rupees have been kept ready for distribution from the district administration to deal with the agitated situation. Due to heavy rains and downpours from upstream, the water of Brahmaputra and Dharla rivers was flowing over Vipatseema in Kurigram. However, while the water in the Brahmaputra river was flowing above 77 cm at Hatia Point on Thursday afternoon, the water in the Dharla river decreased by 4 cm and was flowing below 2 cm in the afternoon.

Banvasi people are in trouble due to the sudden rise in water. They are running for shelter. Most of the Banvasi people spend the night in boats. Even though the government administration has stood by the victims, the government aid has not reached everyone yet. For the past four days, the people of Banvasi have been in trouble with their cows, goats, resources and children due to the increase of water in the rivers at an unusual rate. Those who have boats took shelter in the boats as the water entered the house. Those who do not have a boat, raise lofts and posts inside the house and take shelter there. Cooking there. As there are high-rise buildings and flood shelters around, small vagrants seek shelter there. In such a situation, the agricultural crops including jute, vegetables, sesame seeds and tishi in the field are submerged in water. Farmers are afraid of destruction if it stays like this for a few days. Ferries on the Chilmari-Raumari route have been closed since last Wednesday due to the rising water in the Brahmaputra river and the sinking of the connecting road to the ferry ghat. Due to the closure of ferries, cargo transport has suffered.

In Phulbari in the second term, the houses and houses of hundreds of families are under threat due to the severe erosion of Baromasia river due to continuous heavy rains and hill slopes. Locals fear that the Gorkamandal bridge built on Baromasia river and two unpaved roads will be cut due to severe erosion of the river. 

Bogra: Water continues to rise in Yamuna and Bengali rivers in Sariakandi. On Thursday afternoon, water in the Yamuna river flowed 32 cm above the flood line. In the last 24 hours, about 12,000 families have become waterlogged due to an increase of 68 cm in the river. Upazila executive officer Touhidur Rahman said that the flood has started in this upazila. According to sources of Bogra Water Development Board, the Yamuna River’s width at Sariakandi is 16.25 meters. At 3 pm on Thursday, the water level was 16.57 meters. That is, the water in the river flows 32 cm above the flood line. In the last 24 hours, the water in the river has increased by 68 cm.

Kamalganj (Moulvibazar): The water of Dhalai river has reduced in Kamalganj upazila. After the water receded, the riverside residents are now facing the problem of breaching of the defense embankment. Due to dam failure, people on the banks of the river are leaving their homes on their own initiative and taking shelter elsewhere.

Mirsarai (Chittagong): The lowlands of Mirsarai upazila have been flooded. Thousands of families are living a miserable life due to waterlogging. Daily laborers are suffering due to lack of work. The rural roads of different areas of the upazila have been broken by the mountain torrent. Besides, due to lack of renovation of the canal for a long time and due to unplanned construction of structures, water drainage has stopped and flooding has occurred. The saplings are submerged and eat vegetables.

Sherpur: Though the flash flood in Jhenaigati upazila has improved, at least 20 villages of Ghazirkhamar and Kalspar union of Nalitabari upazila have been inundated by the water coming down from there. The saplings and vegetable fields in the vast lowlands of these villages have been submerged. Due to water rising in many houses, people are in trouble with cattle and poultry. Many families are unable to light their stoves and cook due to rising water in their homes. Many are wading through knee-deep water and using dinghies as rural roads are submerged.  

Dewanganj and Islampur (Jamalpur): Floods have worsened in Dewanganj. Apoch road of Maharani and Kholabari Bridge under construction has collapsed. HSC exam candidates are crossing the risk. Due to the collapse of Dewanganj Chikajani Kholabari Bridge Apoch and Hatibhanga under-construction bypass connecting road, these two main roads with Dewanganj upazila are cut off. 8 unions of Islampur upazila have been submerged. At Bahadurabad ghat point of Yamuna, the water has increased in the last 24 hours and is flowing 69 cm above the flood limit. Abdul Mannan, water meter gauge reader of the Water Development Board, confirmed the matter. 

Gaibandha and Sundarganj: Brahmaputra, Teesta, Karatoa, Ghaghat rivers are increasing rapidly in Gaibandha. According to the information provided by the Gaibandha Water Development Board at 3 pm on Thursday, the water in the Brahmaputra river has increased by 70 cm in the last 24 hours and is flowing 72 cm above the Vipatseema at Phulchari point. On the other hand, the water of Ghaghat river is 9 cm. 20 cm of sea level in the new bridge area increased. flowing over. As a result, at least 30,000 people have been trapped in water by flooding the area along the river. Teesta water is rising in Sundarganj upazila, low-lying areas are sinking. In addition, extensive erosion has occurred in various areas. Water has risen in the central cremation ghat located in Ramdakua area of ​​the municipality. Continued erosion cannot be prevented yet. 

Rangamati: Baghaichhari’s Kachalong Government Degree College center has been hit by floods and the ongoing HSC examination in that center has become uncertain. The college campus has been temporarily turned into an abandoned structure due to flooding. As a result, the Chittagong Education Board postponed the HSC English examination on Thursday at that center. 

Khagrachari: The flood situation in Dighinala has improved. Maini river water has started decreasing. People of 20 villages of Merung Union have started returning home from shelters. Road communication between Khagrachari and Longdur in Rangamati has been normalized after two days of closure. Traffic started on Thursday morning as the water on the road receded.
