The number of cyber crimes in the country has doubled in the last one year. During this period, 11.85 percent of the total crimes took place in the cyber world. 59% of cyber crime victims are women.
The Cyber ​​Crime Awareness Foundation released a report on cyber crime trends in 2024 at the Dhaka Reporters Unit in the capital on Saturday (June 29). Information that emerges in that report.
According to the report, more than 28,000 victims of cybercrime reported to the police last year. Among these victims, only 3.73 percent filed a case. But the actual number of crimes is much higher.
Barrister Najmus Salihin, treasurer of Bangladesh Women in Technology, said that cybercrime is very easy and the culprit is not easily found. Because the laptop or mobile used in the crime was being used by the criminal at the time, it is very difficult to prove it. Moreover, he also commented that money laundering is behind online gambling cases in cyber law.
Ishtiaq Ahmed, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Cyber ​​Crime Investigation Department of DMP, said that if the evidence is properly preserved and presented to the court after seizure, it is possible to get justice for these crimes.
About the budget allocation in this sector, World Bank consultant Hussain Samad said that cyber security sector is allocated from the information technology sector budget. If this continues, desired improvements in cyber security are not possible.
At this time, the director general of BTRC said that 70 percent of cyber crimes are committed at the individual level, emphasizing on increasing individual awareness to avoid cyber crimes.
