84 percent of the country’s export income comes from the garment sector: Textile Minister

Bantra and Jute Minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak said that currently more than 84 percent of Bangladesh’s export income is the main driving force of the country’s economy from the garment industry.

He said this in response to a written question of Independent Member of Parliament Md. Khosru Chowdhury presented on the table in the National Parliament on Thursday (June 27).

Jahangir Kabir Nanak said that so far 1 thousand 83 local and foreign buying houses have been registered. These buying houses are helping in the expansion of new markets for products and the development of this industry.

The minister said that an average of more than 5,000 students from various educational institutions under the jurisdiction of the Department of Textiles pass out in the field of textiles every year and contribute to the textile sector by engaging in the jobs of various domestic and foreign industrial establishments. At present, 9 textile engineering colleges and 15 textile diploma institutes, 41 textile vocational institutes are running under the Department of Textiles. The technical capacity of this industry is being increased by adding new courses.
