Muazzin and his pregnant wife died in a landslide in Cox’s Bazar

Struggle Online: A pregnant wife and husband were killed in landslides due to heavy rains in Badshaghona of Cox’s Bazar city. Local Ward Councilor Panel Mayor Helal Uddin Kabir said that the landslide occurred in the Badshaghona-Khazamanzil area of ​​Ward No. 9 of Cox’s Bazar Municipality around 3:30 pm on Friday (June 21).

The deceased are Hafez Md. Anwar Hossain (23) and seven months pregnant wife Maymuna Akhter (18). Anwar Hossain is the son of expatriate Nazir Ahmed of Badshah Ghona. He was a brother of 5 sisters and the second child of his parents. Umar Farooq, a native of Anwar, used to be the muezzin of the Jama Masjid. 

With reference to Abdullah’s uncle of the deceased, their neighbor Saimun Amin said that it started raining heavily around three o’clock in the night. It goes on for hours. In the meantime, suddenly the hill near the house collapsed and fell on the house of Anwar. In this, the husband and wife who are sleeping on the bed are buried while giving the rice. When Anwar’s mother and sisters in the other room got up and screamed, the people around them came forward. Anwar and his wife were rescued and taken to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital. There, the emergency department doctors declared them dead. 

Abdullah complained to the media and said, ‘After learning about the mountain collapse, the National Emergency Service 999 and Cox’s Bazar Fire Brigade were called for several hours. But as they did not respond, the locals moved the soil randomly. One person’s hand and another’s leg were amputated while removing the tin of rice. Later, the members of the fire brigade came to the hospital and took the body and the photos of the scene. 

Relatives said that Maimuna was socially married to the deceased Anwar Hossain eight months ago. Anwar wakes up once during the rain at night, observes everything and goes back to sleep. Seeing the heavy rain, his (Anwar’s) mother asked his son to move from their room to another room with his wife. But because nothing will happen, Anwar and Maimuna fell asleep again hugging each other. That is how they were rescued.

Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital Dr. Ashiqur Rahman said, ‘Two people were rescued from the ground and brought to the emergency department. They died before reaching the hospital. The bodies are in the morgue.’

Last Wednesday (June 19) 10 people, including two locals, died in separate landslides at the Rohingya camp in Ukhia, Cox’s Bazar.
