After 4 months of child marriage, the girl was found dead, the family claimed murder

The police recovered the ‘hanging’ body of a housewife named Mim Khatun (16) in Mirpur upazila of Kushtia. His body was recovered from Ramnagar village of Kursha Union of the upazila on Saturday morning and sent to Kushtia General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.

The recovered body is the wife of Sujan Ali, a resident of Ramnagar village in Kursha union of Mim upazila and the daughter of Shajahan Ali of Srirampur village in Sadarpur union of the same upazila. He studied in the seventh standard at the local Srirampur Mojaddediya Dakhil Madrasa. He had a child marriage with Sujan four months ago.

Mim’s father, van driver Shajahan Ali, complained that during the marriage, according to the demand of the boy’s side, he was supposed to give 1.5 lakh taka, refrigerator, jewelry and other household items. Then he told that he could not give all the things at once, but gradually. But under the pressure of Mim’s in-laws, husband Sujan and father-in-law Mustafa kicked Mim out of the house by beating her for dowry money 15 days ago. Later, Sujan’s father and relatives came and took Mim to the in-laws’ house after talking. After going there, he tortured and killed Mim again.

Shajahan Ali said, “Seeing the situation was bad, he tied a rope around Mim’s neck and hung the body from the ceiling of the house. Even after the night passed, the news of Mim’s death was not conveyed to the father’s house. I received the news of the death of local Union Parishad (UP) member Shahidul Islam through a phone call. Sore injuries were seen on the body’s face, forehead, and neck. But the in-laws say that Mim committed suicide.

Mim’s husband Sujan Ali and father-in-law Mustafa’s mobile numbers were also found to be closed regarding the complaint. Local Kursha UP member Shahidul Islam told Prothom Alo that he found out this morning that Sujan’s wife Mim committed suicide by hanging a rope around her neck. He went to the spot and saw that the police were recovering the body. But there was a bruise on his forehead. There is also a scar on the neck. He said, ‘As far as I heard, there was a marital dispute between them for several days. This happened because of him.’

Mirpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mustafa Habibullah told Prothom Alo that the body was recovered after receiving local information. Initially, a case of wrongful death has been registered in this incident. The body was recovered and sent to Kushtia General Hospital morgue. The actual cause of death will be known after the autopsy report. Police will take legal action in case of murder. The family’s complaint is being investigated.
