4 arrested in connection with gold robbery in Old Dhaka

Wari police station arrested four people in connection with gold robbery in Kaptanbazar of Old Dhaka in the capital last Thursday. They were arrested in raids in Dhaka and Narayanganj on Sunday night. At this time, 500 grams of gold was recovered from them.

The arrested persons are Md. Mokhtar Hossain (54), Sadek Hossain (36). Their associates are Nasima Begum (40) and Mocha. Kajol (40).

Goldsmith Muhammad Ali filed a case in this incident last Friday. He claimed that 40 tons of molten gold weighing 5 annas was stolen.

According to Wari police station, on Thursday afternoon, goldsmith Mohammad Ali’s younger brother Md. Jasim and shop employee Malek left Narayanganj for the Tantibazar shop in Old Dhaka with 40 loads of molten gold weighing 5 annas. They got down from the bus in Gulistan and were going to Tantibazar on foot. After reaching in front of Ershad Market Building-1 in Kaptanbazar, Jasim turned back and saw that the employee Malek was not with him. At this time, he found the employee Malek’s mobile phone switched off. On that day, at around 4:30 PM, Malek called Jasim and told him that five or six robbers had forcibly taken him from Kaptan Bazar to Thantari Bazar Star Hotel and beaten him and taken the molten gold from him. The next day goldsmith Mohammad Ali filed a robbery case at Wari police station as plaintiff.

Wari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jane Alam Munshi told Prothom Alo on Monday that the accused of Ejahar are unknown. Apart from that, the police did not have any clues about the robbery. The police reviewed the footage of 130 closed circuit (CC) cameras in and around the crime scene and conducted raids in Dhaka and Narayanganj with the help of information technology and arrested Mokhtar Hossain and Sadek Hossain. Associate Nasima Begum and Mocha on the basis of their information. Kajal was arrested. After the gold robbery, Nasima’s husband allowed her to keep 500 grams of gold. The police seized them from under the bed of Nasima and her house. An operation is underway to arrest Nasima’s husband and other robbers.

Police officer Jane Alam said that the stolen gold was worth around Tk 45 lakh. Apart from the two arrested women, others including Moktar and Sadek are transport workers.
