Former Secretary AMM Nasir Uddin has been appointed as Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). At the same time, the government has selected four people as commissioners.
The President made the appointment based on the recommendations of the search committee. On Thursday (November 21), a notification was issued in this regard from the Cabinet Department.
The newly appointed five commissioners will take oath at the Supreme Court lounge next Sunday afternoon. Chief Justice Syed Refat Ahmed will administer the oath to them, according to sources in the Chief Justice’s office.
The newly appointed election commissioners are retired Additional Secretary Md. Anwarul Islam Sarkar, Retired District and Sessions Judge Abdur Rahmanel Masood, Retired Joint Secretary Begum Tahmida Ahmed and Retired Brigadier General Abul Fazal. Sanaullah
Earlier on Wednesday, a six-member search committee headed by Justice Zubair Rahman Chowdhury of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court sent a list of 10 people to the President in the form of recommendations. The government selects five people from among them. During the formation of the previous three election commissions, the members of the search committee went to Bangabhaban and met the President and submitted their names, but this time they did not go. Before this, the search committee invited names from various social organizations and individuals including political parties. According to party sources, the name of AMM Nasir Uddin was in the list of BNP, one of the main political parties of the country.
The next National Assembly elections will be held under this commission, which has been given responsibility for the next five years. Besides, all other elections including City Corporation, District Council, Upejla Parishad, Municipal Council, Union Parishad will also be held under this commission.
On October 29, the interim government formed a six-member search committee to form the EC headed by Justice Zubair Rahman Chowdhury, judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court. Other members of the committee are – Justice AKM Asaduzzaman of the High Court Division, Auditor General and Controller Md. Nurul Islam, Chairman of Public Works Commission (PSC) Mobaswer Monem, former professor of International Relations Department of Dhaka University. The list of 10 names proposed by the search committee for the formation of the EC was given to the President at Bangabhaban on Wednesday (November 20) evening. Last Thursday, the next Election Commission (EC) was formed with 5 people from that list.
