Italy will help Bangladesh police reform

Italy’s ambassador to Dhaka, Antonio Alessandro, said Italy would work together to help Bangladesh police reform and formal immigration to the country.

Tejgaon’s chief adviser on Wednesday. The ambassador made this comment during a courtesy meeting with Muhammad Yunus.

Safe, organized and regular migration to Italy, economic and trade cooperation and police reform dominated the discussion. The meeting came a week after a meeting between the chief adviser and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the UN headquarters in New York.

In the meeting of the United Nations, Professor Yunus called for formal migration from Bangladesh to Italy on a large scale.

Meloni said that both countries should make strong efforts to prevent illegal immigration.

He said, ‘We want to protect the immigrants of Bangladesh. We must work for better regular migration.’

The Italian ambassador praised the reform efforts of the interim government and offered Italy’s assistance in police reform, including training of the security forces.

He said, ‘Our police provide this assistance in several countries.’

The ambassador expressed hope that bilateral trade between the two countries would ‘turn around soon’.

He said that currently the bilateral trade between the two countries is about 2.5 billion US dollars.

He said that the Italian Embassy will soon organize a film festival and a ballet institute
