The United States has announced a new aid of 199 million US dollars (2 thousand 378 crore 80 lakh 62 thousand taka in Bangladeshi currency) for the Rohingya people who fled from Myanmar and took refuge in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh.

The announcement was made by U.S. Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy and Human Rights Uzra Jaya at a United Nations General Assembly event in New York on Tuesday local time. This information is known from the State Department press release of the country.

According to the notification of the US State Department, the Department of Population, Refugees and Migration of the US government will provide 70 million dollars in new assistance. The remaining $129 million will be provided by USAID. And USD 78 million out of USAID’s 129 million USD will be given by the Department of Agricultural Products of the US Government. The department will help procure, transport and distribute food to the Rohingya from farmers across the country.

The United States hopes that this assistance will help save the Rohingya people fleeing from Myanmar to Bangladesh from violence and persecution. Apart from this, the aid fund will also help the Rohingyas in disaster preparedness. At the same time, it will provide an opportunity to increase the education and skills of the Rohingyas. The United States believes that this aid fund will also provide an incentive for Rohingya refugees to return home quickly.

Since 2017, the United States has so far sent 2.5 billion US dollars in aid funds to Rohingya refugees and locals. Of this, 2.1 billion dollars have been sent to the Rohingyas who have taken refuge in Bangladesh. Of this, the Department of Population, Refugees and Migration of the US government sent 1.3 dollars.

The US Embassy said it is committed to providing assistance to crisis-hit communities in Bangladesh.
