Myanmar flood death toll rises to 384

The death toll in Myanmar from Cyclone Yagi and deep depression in the Bay of Bengal has risen to 384. 89 people are still missing.

According to a report by Myanmar’s State Administration Council, the dead included 164 people from Nay Pyi Taw Autonomous Region, 134 from Mandalay Region, 78 from Shan Province, five from Kayin Province, two from Bago Region and one from Ayeyarwady Region.

Floods have affected more than half a hundred areas of the country’s nine regions and provinces, which is about 16 percent of the country.

2 thousand 149 buildings were completely destroyed, 3 thousand 455 partially and 546 schools were submerged and damaged in the flood. Besides, 533 roads and bridges, 2 thousand 489 electricity poles and 99 communication towers were destroyed.

The report also informed that 1 lakh 48 thousand 643 people were affected. 7 lakh 35 thousand 461 acres of crops were destroyed and 1 lakh 44 thousand 998 cattle died.

This flood was the most devastating in the last 50 years. Heavy rains and torrential rains during the night added to the casualties.

Local authorities, rescue agencies and residents are working together to clear the affected areas, distribute healthcare, food and other essentials, the State Administration Council said.
