Death toll in Myanmar floods rises to 113 The country’s military government has reported heavy rains due to Typhoon Yagi.
The spokesman of the military government Ja Min Tun said in the last night bulletin of state-run MR television that 320,000 people were forced to leave their homes. 64 people are still missing. He said, ‘The government is conducting rescue and rehabilitation activities.’
Typhoon Yagi is the strongest cyclone to hit South Asia this year, the Guardian reported citing meteorologists. It also hit Vietnam and Thailand. Rivers in the area overflowed with floodwaters and surrounding towns were submerged.
Since the military coup in February 2021, Myanmar has been in a stalemate. Most of the country is under the control of the rebels.
The UN Office of the Coordinator for Human Rights (OCHA) reported that the storm mainly affected the capital Naypyidaw, Mandal, Mogwe, Bago Region and Shan Province.
According to state media, five dams, four pagodas and more than 65,000 houses were damaged in the floods.
Donor organizations including the Red Cross have said that 5.5 million people need humanitarian assistance. Relief and rescue operations cannot be carried out in many areas due to security risks and access restrictions.
