Flood disaster: India will help Bangladesh in future

The two countries (Bangladesh and India) should work together in flood warning and forecasting, said Farida Akhtar, Advisor to the Interim Government on Fisheries and Livestock.

He said, apart from the rain, due to the opening of dams in the upstream of India, it is possible to reduce the loss of life and property if we get advance information about the flood.

At this time, the Indian High Commissioner assigned to Bangladesh, Prannoy Verma, assured that Bangladesh would be assisted in the future by providing necessary information.

Prannoy Verma, the Indian High Commissioner appointed in Dhaka, met the Fisheries and Livestock Adviser at the Secretariat on Tuesday morning.

During the meeting, issues related to the interests of the two countries were discussed. Areas of cooperation were identified, particularly in the fisheries and livestock sectors, strengthening of regional institutions and the flood and post-flood situation of the two countries were discussed. Also there was a discussion about adjusting the period of ban on fishing in the sea.

Fishery advisor said, fish harvesting is prohibited for 65 days during the breeding season in the sea area of ​​Bangladesh. As there is no ban on fishing in Indian waters at the same time, the fisheries resources of both the countries are suffering.

The advisor sought the cooperation of the Government of India in implementing the ban period by fixing a specific time between the two countries. During the talks, the two countries also agreed to speed up BIMSTEC.

Farida Akhtar welcomed the High Commissioner and said that as part of the ongoing reforms, the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock is carrying out various activities in various sectors.

In the meeting, on behalf of Bangladesh, the Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Syed Mahmud Belal Haider, Additional Secretary Md. Abdul Qayyum, Additional Secretary ATM, M. Mustafa Kamal and senior officials and Deputy High Commissioner of Indian Embassy Pawan Bede, First Secretary V. Pratik Niyogi was present.
