Tipu Munshi has been arrested in connection with the murder of gold worker Muslim Uddin Milan, who was shot dead during an anti-discrimination student movement in Rangpur. RAB arrested him from Gulshan area of ​​the capital on Wednesday at 1:10 pm.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Imran Khan of media wing of RAB headquarters informed this information. He told Samakal that he was arrested in the murder case filed in connection with the clash with the police and Awami League leaders during the anti-discrimination student movement in Rangpur.

It is known that during the anti-discrimination student movement in Rangpur, police and Awami League leaders and activists clashed. At that time, a gold worker named Muslim Uddin Milan was shot and killed. In this incident, a murder case was filed against 17 people including former commerce minister Tipu Munshi. He was arrested in that case.

On August 22, Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) froze the bank accounts of Tipu Munshi and his family members. Along with that, the bank account transactions of the businesses owned by them were also suspended.

A case was filed against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 119 people in connection with the death of auto-rickshaw driver Manik Mia in Rangpur on August 20 during the student-public movement. The accused in that case is Tipu Munshi.

Tipu Munshi was defeated in the eighth national election in 2001 from Rangpur-4 seat on the nomination of Awami League. After that, in the 2008 ninth, 2014 tenth and 2018 eleventh national parliamentary elections, he was elected as a member of parliament from Rangpur-4 (Pirgacha-Kaunia) seat on the nomination of Awami League. He was a member of the Standing Committee on Textiles and Jute Ministry in the 9th National Parliament, the President of the Standing Committee on the Ministry of Home Affairs and a member of the Standing Committee on the Ministry of Finance in the 10th National Parliament. From January 7, 2019, he served as Commerce Minister in Sheikh Hasina’s fourth cabinet.

On August 5, 2024, the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned in the face of the Non-Cooperation Movement and fled to India. The next day, on August 6, the President dissolved Parliament and Tipu Munshi lost his position as a Member of Parliament.
