Former MP of Satkhira-1 Constituency and BNP central leader Habibul Islam Habib and 46 activists have been granted bail in the case of attack on Awami League president Sheikh Hasina’s motorcade.

The 11th Bench of the High Court granted them bail on Tuesday. As a result, there was no obstacle to the release of other accused in this case including him. Lawyers said that with his release, the way for the release of bail for those who have been imprisoned for a long time in various political cases has been paved.

Former MP Habibul Islam Habib’s wife and Supreme Court advocate Shahanara Akhtar Bakul said that in the case filed in 2002 regarding the attack on the then opposition leader Sheikh Hasina’s convoy in Kalaroa, the court sentenced 50 BNP leaders and activists including former MP Habib to various terms under the Arms and Explosives Act. Among them, Habibul Islam Habib, the central leader of BNP, was given a maximum sentence of 70 years. The jailed BNP activists appealed to the higher court against the verdict of the lower court. The court granted bail to 46 prisoners including former MP Habib. He also said that as a result there is no obstacle to the release of BNP central leader Habib and other accused from prison.

Pro-BNP lawyers said that many activists of BNP have been in jail for years. Efforts are on to release them on bail soon after overcoming legal complications. As a result, Habibul Islam Habib got bail. However, the cases of BNP Vice Chairman Abdus Salam Pintu, former Home Minister Lutfuzzaman Babar, Kushtia District BNP Advisor and Kumarkhali Municipal BNP Convener Humayun Kabir are still in jail. All three of them have been imprisoned for 17 years. Lawyers are hopeful that they will be bailed.

Humayun Kabir’s younger brother Manik said, immediately withdraw the false case and return my brother to the family. After taking him to jail, the terrorists of Awami League occupied all their businesses and houses as well. They had to be subjected to extreme torture. His children grew up without their father’s love. It is extreme cruelty.
